Temu Introduces New GI Protection Feature to Support Local Producers

01.10.2026

DUBLIN, Oct. 1, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- Temu has added a new dedicated geographical indications (GI) category to its Brand Registry Portal to support local producers and strengthen the safeguarding of authentic GI products online. Available across all markets, the new GI feature gives rightsholders a direct way to cooperate with Temu and submit notifications concerning potential GI infringements for review.

Geographical indications identify products whose qualities or reputation are linked to their geographical origin, carrying economic, social and cultural value for local communities. Protecting these rights online helps maintain consumer trust and supports producers whose livelihoods depend on the reputation of their products. The dedicated GI category builds on Temu's existing support for IP protection by making the process more streamlined and accessible.

The GI feature is among the latest measures that Temu has introduced to support businesses, drawing from feedback from more than 100 meetings with trade associations, chambers of commerce and start-up networks across Europe, where complexity emerged as a recurring barrier to doing online business.

"We want to support local businesses with practical tools that reduce complexity," said a Temu spokesperson. "For GI rightsholders, this means a clearer way to work directly with us to help protect the authenticity of their products and the expertise and heritage behind them."

The update is part of Temu's broader IP protection efforts, which combine cooperation with rightsholders, proactive monitoring, proprietary technology and human expert review.

According to Temu's 2026 Intellectual Property Protection Report, the company's proactive monitoring database covers more than 15,000 brands. Proactive removals of potentially infringing listings outnumbered reactive takedowns by 331 to 1 during the reporting period. Temu also works directly with more than 3,000 brands through its Brand Guardian Initiative and provides IP compliance resources through its Seller Education Center.
